Melanie Reim’s work exudes the joy and telling reality she captures as she conveys
the extraordinary stories of everyday life, a sketchbook never far from her side.

Her work is steeped in the foundation of observational drawing and practice, delivered through an expressive, stylized line and an acute command of the figure. She is fast and fearless, often placing herself amid a crowd, a parade, or a protest- the more people, the better!

As a world traveler, noted reportage illustrator, educator and lecturer,
Melanie often documents working women, captured through her ongoing project,
Another Woman’s Life. Many can be seen in her first monograph, Different & The Same
My Drawings and Stories of Women Around the World.

For 25 years, Melanie dedicated herself to the education of young, emerging artists
and illustrators at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. After founding and chairing the MFA in Illustration degree program, teaching scores of graduate and undergraduate students, many now friends and colleagues, she finished her storied journey in academia as a Professor and the Associate Dean of the School of Art and Design. Throughout, Melanie maintained an illustration and research practice that included teaching at Altos de Chavon School of Design in the Dominican Republic, where she was a Fulbright Scholar, embraced by a country and culture
that has inspired many of her stories and works, as well as writing and contributing to a number
of books on the art of illustration and urban sketching.

Melanie has now returned full time to her love for drawing, painting, and traveling
to lecture and deliver workshops, at her studio in New York City and throughout the globe.
